Dear Subscriber,

Well, it's official. The federal government has agreed to not only fund pharmacare, but all health care. From cradle to grave, all expenses of any kind will now be provided a no charge, with no income or age test. This will include, vision, parameds, travel and of course 100% drug coverage. In a rare moment of thrift, they have decided that dental coverage will cover 100% of basic and major work, but only orthodontics to age 25.

I'm quite confident that this will have no impact on most benefit advisors as employers will finally have spare funds to invest in CI and...wellness spending accounts and...? Watch here for more details, or simply choose to ignore this as it's only an April Fools Joke.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. :-) For those of you hyperventilating, just remember that Quebec instituted mandatory pharmacare back in 1997 and although there was a drop in private coverage for a couple years, the market rebounded as employers tried to do better. The same happened in BC. Everyone worried about employers walking away from benefit plans, only to find that NOT to be the case at all.

Joke or no joke, we'll be fine. In the end employers will always need an advocate, a guide, a partner to help they and their employees and you're it.

Dave

TELEMEDICINE TRANSLATES INTO COST REDUCTION
The increased adoption of telemedicine platforms directly translate into cost and strain reduction on Canada’s healthcare system, says a study by Dialogue Health Technologies Inc. and Sun Life Financial Inc. ‘The Economic Impact of Telemedicine in Canada’’ report shows, for example, on average, a visit to the emergency department in Canada costs the public healthcare system $202 while a visit to a doctor’s office or clinic costs $44 per consultation. Economic modelling suggests that telemedicine platforms, such as Dialogue and Lumino Health Virtual Care, save the Canadian healthcare system $52 on average for every consultation that would have otherwise taken place through standard public care. As telemedicine adoption rates continue to rise, it is estimated that by 2025, these platforms could save governments up to $1 billion per year. For employers, the report shows on average a 32 per cent return on investment (ROI) ‒ which considers productivity lost to employee transportation, waiting times, net cost of service, and other factors associated with in-person care.

SENIOR MANAGERS WANT WORK ON-SITE
More than of half senior managers in Canada want their teams to work on-site full time as COVID-19-related restrictions ease, says a Robert Half survey. Currently, 44 per cent support long-term hybrid schedules (where staff can divide time between the office and another location) with managers of companies with 1,000 or more employees most open to flexibility. However, separate research from the company reveals that a full return to the office may lead to more resignations. Of professionals currently working from home in Canada, more than half of (53 per cent) would look for a new job that offers remote options if their company required employees to return to the office five days a week. Millennial professionals (68 per cent) and working parents (59 per cent) are most likely to quit if called back. “It’s clear professionals want continued flexibility in where and how they work. However, some companies appear to be out of sync with their employees’ priorities as they plan for the future,” says David King, Canadian senior managing director of Robert Half. “In today’s tight talent market, eliminating remote work options will only make hiring and retention more challenging. Employers need to move past the idea that collaboration and innovation only happen in the office and recognize that people are more engaged and motivated when they have a say in where they work.”

SETH GODIN'S BLOG -  Expertise vs Attitude

The typical online job site lists millions of jobs. And just about every one of them is a cry for expertise.

From the title to the requirements, companies hire for expertise.

Logic helps us understand that only one out of ten people are in the top 10% when it comes to expertise. And that means that most companies are settling for good enough. If the organization needs people with expertise in the top decile, they’re going to have to pay far more and work far harder to find and retain that sort of skill.

So most companies don’t try. They create jobs that can be done pretty well by people with a typical amount of expertise.

That means that the actual differentiator in just about every job is attitude. From plumbers to carpenters to radiologists to pharmacists, someone with extraordinary soft skills (honesty, commitment, compassion, resilience, enrollment in the journey, empathy, willingness to be coached… the real skills that we actually care about) is going to outperform.

If this is so obviously true, then why don’t organizations hire for attitude and train for expertise?

My Take on Seths Post

Put another way... and we talk about this all the time. It's the soft skills that are hard to teach. The technical is relatively easy.

I think it was Rob Crowder that taught me that their most successful hires had the right attitude, were a great fit, and good team players. They may have needed some training on the technical side, but that was a lot easier than trying to make candidates better communicators, relationship builders etc.

I think we could carry this into choosing our clients. If they have the right attitude, they value us, and our paths are aligned, it's likely a good fit. We can always teach them to be better benefit administrators etc. A knowledgable client that thinks they know it all, but don't value what we bring to the relationship, is not nearly as good a fit.
