Dear Subscriber,

As you're reading this, I am on my way to Verona, Italy to prepare for my son Matt's wedding. It's been a hectic year with higher than average business activity, a renovation (total rebuild) of what is now our new home and then the move in (of both home and office). Life is never boring.

All that said, it's never been a better time to be in this business. I have had more people interested in implementing benefit plans for the first time , than ever before. It may be due to COVID, the employee driven market, or just wearing them down over time, but whatever the reason, it's a good thing to have the interest in benefits rising.

I hope your business is doing as well too, and if a bit slower, maybe reach back out to those old prospects...the timing may just be right.

POST-COVID POLICIES NEEDED

Employers now need to develop policies and practices for the post-COVID workplace that account for various types of work, including in hiring, day-to-day work, and promotion decisions, says Maddie Axelrod, a partner at Borden Ladner Gervais. In its ‘Legal Implications for your Hybrid Workplace’ session with Melissa L. Eldridge, a counsel at the firm, she said this is an opportunity to review a company’s general culture and practices to ensure an inclusive environment, keeping in mind some employees may prefer remote work for various reasons including protected grounds under human rights protection. An effective hybrid or remote working policy and code of conduct should set clear expectations and define rules on who, how much, where, for how long, and notice on when it will end. It should remind employees of their obligations to the employer, for performance, on attendance, their duty of loyalty, and confidentiality of workplace information. Clear procedures around hours of work and overtime should be set and there should be a description on what the employer will reimburse. Eldridge said in the current environment employees are asking for flexibility, but it needs to be practical flexibility in terms of hours of work and location. The shift in workplace culture sees employers turning their minds to the type of workplace they should be offering employees.

SETH GODIN'S BLOG -  Everyone else is

Well, not everyone. Just most people.

When you do something that everyone else is doing, you’re likely to get what everyone else is getting.

But in almost every population, “everyone” leaves out the people who go first, who change things, who are weird and who challenge the status quo.

That’s an option, even when it doesn’t seem that way.

Mass culture gets us more mass culture. It’s not the only choice.

My Take on Seths Post

Put another way... You being "you" and not a version of everyone else is just fine. I'd classify myself as one of those "weird ones" that challenges things. Why not do the same, be different and make a difference?

What we do NOT need is more cookie cutter "order taker" advisors. You know the ones that can only sell by undercutting rates, that can't sell a renewal, that never provide true advice...instead they are content to quote the same plan the prospect or client always had, rather than engaging and improving things. Shake it up. You'll be amazed how much clients love us weirdos....

A second one that might be of interest...

Just because they’re easy to measure doesn’t mean they matter.

If they appear in round numbers and are easily compared to those from others, we’re tempted to compare.

But something that looks like a useful metric might not be.

If you’re working with people who say they care about measurement, it might not pay to persuade them to stop measuring.

It might make more sense to give them useful numbers to measure instead.

I liked this because it reminds me of the chats we often have around rate increases. Why follow insurer "false metrics" when you have your own you can use. Why track numbers that matter to others, when you really want the ones that mater to you?
