Dear Subscriber,

Happy Canada Day (a day early). Let's pause to be thankful for being born in, or choosing this greta country as our home. We are far from perfect, but as we look at; how some countries handled COVID, the situation in the Ukraine, the ongoing issues in the US and more, I think we need to appreciate what we have.

When it comes to politics, we are more divided than ever, but even so not that different at all. I have shared an image of our political system with my kids for years. It goes like this...

Hold up your hand with thumb and finger an inch apart. This is how far our "right" and "left" are in Canada.

Hold your thumb and finger as far apart as you can. This is the differnce between the US right and left.

Hold 2 hands a foot apart and that is a lot of Europe

Hold your hands as far apart as you can that is some other countries in the rest of the world.

We don't have a party that is trying to remove; healthcare, pensions, women's right to vote (or abortion), minority groups rights etc. etc.

Let's have a great long weekend and take a minute to look at the Canadian flag, smile and be thankful.

MENTAL HEALTH CLAIMS RISE
While fewer Canadians submitted prescription drug claims in 2021, there was a noticeable increase in the number of claims for mental health related medications during the second year of the pandemic, says the TELUS Health ‘2022 Drug Data Trends and National Benchmarks Report.’ It shows specialty medications for chronic conditions continued to make a bigger impact on insurance plan spending and on the eligible amount per insured, with growth rates at approximately 10 per cent. It helps paint a picture of how COVID-19 impacted overall claims due to delayed diagnosis and surgeries as well as the ability to secure new prescriptions. While the antibiotics/anti-infectives category continued to be the top category by number of claimants, the share of claimants dropped significantly in 2020, and again in 2021. “The number of claims for antibiotics and anti-infectives in 2021 were impacted by the pandemic. Postponed surgeries, fewer appointments with prescribers, including dentists, and public-health measures such as wearing masks, led to lower rates of infection,” says Caroline Le Pottier, a consultant pharmacist at TELUS Health. “This backlog in diagnoses and treatments will likely have a spill-over effect for years to come, especially since patients claimed to have avoided seeking medical care for various serious conditions through the pandemic.”

SETH GODIN'S BLOG -  “And then what happens”

We’re not very good at predicting the future.

We’ve very good at being aware of the urgency of the moment, and familiar with our need to deal with emergencies.

Before we react, though, it might be worth asking “and then what happens,” five times.

Five steps from here to there…

If any of the steps involve, “and then a miracle happens,” or “we’ll deal with that later,” it might be worth taking a few more moments to reconsider the first step.

My Take on Seths Post

Put another way... I just like this. Let's look ahead, be pragmatic and figure the long term effects. Maybe we shouldn't even start.

An example is when advisors say "don't worry about it, you're covered" to an employee without thinking further. If a group plan question, maybe the employee doesn't have provincial plan coverage (so no group), if a travel question, then maybe travelling in unstable health, or a disability coverage issue with a pre-ex. THINK a few steps ahead...
