Dear Subscriber,

Happy August.

I hate to start a newsletter with an apology, but it looks the CGIB membership renewal system sent out the early reminders (membership ends August 31st) but attached a "broken" pdf invoice and in some cases link too. I've escalated it to the IT department to get resolved but you may see another e-mail or two before the end of the month as we work through it. So sorry, and sorry in advance.

It's continued to be busy but as more clients and prospects take time off I feel like summer is here and things are slowing (in a good way). I'm trying to enjoy some of these great days and get away from the office to decompress.... but it doesn't always go as planned.

Last week I finished calls early and jumped on my little catamaran to sail in that stormy day (winds were about 50 kph gusting to 65+) and i flipped a few times. No worries I was wearing a PFD and the waters warm. next thing you know I'm drifting down the lake with the boat on it's side. I righted it a few times but the wind picked up more, so I just drifted along taking a break. A minute or two later some neighbours showed up to help me out. As I came back to the dock I was met by police, fire and ambulance. Someone thought I was in danger and called 911 (I wasn't, but would always pick safe over sorry). All ended well with no damage done, except my pride ;-) Sometimes things just don't go as you plan, but how we react and recover is what matters (I've been out 4 or 5 times since :-).

This may be bad timing to let you know... If you're in the GTA and want to skip off on a Friday and go sailing with me (on the big boat that does NOT flip over), we have some spots available at the end of the August and through September. Get the details here... https://www.mainstayinsurance.ca/summer-sailing-with-mainstay/

EMPLOYEE MUST MITIGATE DISMISSAL
The duty to mitigate requires that a dismissed employee pursue available opportunities in their field or industry, says a Supreme Court of British Columbia decision in a wrongful dismissal. It is all the more significant considering the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on several major industries, says a Fasken ‘HR Space.’ In this particular case, the employer produced evidence of jobs that the employee could have applied for in her industry, despite the economic downturn. Given the evidence of available positions, it was not reasonable for the employee to look for work in a new field or at least to fail to apply for available positions in her field of experience, said the court. This decision stressed the importance for employers who wish to raise a failure to mitigate argument to gather evidence of any and all positions for which their former employee would have been a suitable candidate. In the wrongful dismissal context, a dismissed employee typically has a duty to mitigate their losses following a dismissal. That duty to mitigate most often requires an employee to search, apply for, and accept reasonable new employment to mitigate any claimed losses. A court may reduce the notice period where a dismissed employee fails to take reasonable steps to mitigate, usually by failing to reasonably pursue new opportunities.

TWO-TIER HEALTHCARE WORKS ELSEWHERE
The evidence from around the world demonstrates that it is possible to hold onto the key priority of the healthcare system – universal care for all – and introduce private services and private health insurance to support that priority, says Raymond Rupert, CEO of RCM Health Consultancy Inc. This makes a British Columbia court’s decision denying access to private health seemingly based on a “misguided notion and misinformation,” he says. Looking at other health systems shows there are many different ways that this, in fact, can work. While the concept of ‘two-tier healthcare’ carries a very negative connotation in Canada’s health policy discourse, other countries have been very successful using a combined private-public approach while ensuring universality. In the European Union, 25 countries offer universal healthcare, similar to Canada, which includes a government-regulated network of private health insurance companies. Australia provides universal coverage to all residents. However unlike Canadians, Australians can purchase private health insurance that allows for faster access to non-emergency services and greater selection of healthcare providers. It made the decision in the 1970s that private dollars would fund private infrastructure to increase total healthcare capacity and it worked. Not only can private insurers act as key partners to ensure universal health insurance coverage, he says they’re a common feature in many of the countries that don’t experience the excessive wait times and lack of capacity or poor service that plagues Canada’s healthcare system.

DRUG ADHERENCE MATTERS
Adherence to using drugs matters, says Vishal Ravikanti, director, pharmacy consulting and partnerships, health benefits management, at TELUS Health. In the article ‘From Adherence To Delayed Diagnoses, What You Need To Know About Medication Use’ at the Benefits and Pensions Monitor website, he says, for example, supporting adherence for just one person with rheumatoid arthritis – which is the highest cost drug category based on eligible amounts ‒ can save plans tens of thousands of dollars. “This makes a very compelling case for improving adherence. The challenge is how best to do that,” he says.

SETH GODIN'S BLOG -

Detachment and commitment Working professionals develop emotional detachment. It’s the only way to thrive in the work. Emotional detachment helps us remember that we are not our work, and that feedback is useful, not an attack.

Commitment permits us to keep going (especially when we’re asked to provide more effort than we planned).

It’s easy to confuse the two.

Being detached doesn’t mean you don’t care. It simply means you’re focusing on the work and those you serve, not on your own narrative.
And being committed comes from a professional decision, not from an existential crisis.

My Take on Seths Post

Put another way...That's exactly what we do. In sales you need to not let rejection get to you. The prospect is saying no to the offer, in most cases, not to you (they don't even know you, how can they hate you after one call?). We need to commit to those that we connect to, and care about them as we grow our relationships longer term.

KEYNOTE SESSION:

Linda Duxbury - TORN BETWEEN WANT AND REALITY: HYBRID WORK AND WORK-LIFE BALANCE

More than two years after many employees started working from their homes, both employers and employees are talking about how they want to work post-pandemic. However, few are factoring work-life boundary preferences into the discussion. Research in this area has shown employees use two different approaches — segmentation and integration — when attempting to balance work and family. This session will use data from the 2020-23 Employee Wellbeing in Times of COVID-19 study to review the relationship between boundary management preferences, work-life balance and employee well-being, outlining the implications for employers and employees as they seek a balance between what they want and what’s actually best for them.
