Dear Subscriber,

Fall is in the air and approaching fast... next week in fact. Kids are back to school, seminars and educational events are filling up calendars and more businesses are looking at adding benefits. We are very lucky to have chosen this industry (or letting it choose us) and that has been apparent over the pandemic and maybe even more so as we emerge into the new reality.

If you'd asked me, a few years ago, if I thought that marketing to restaurants (as an example) was a good idea, I'd say you're wasting your time. Except for owners, managers and maybe chefs, there was little interest in investing in their staff. Now, we've seen that change, and a may viable market grow like never before. Maybe make a call to those you ignored in the past.

Go into the fall with the goal of learning more (our events), of growing more (your practice), and sharing more (with staff, clients and mentees). You'll be pleased by the size of the returns.

May the sails be with you (can you feel sailing season is almost done :-(

SENIOR EMPLOYEES EXPECT BENEFITS
Increasing longevity, combined with changing working patterns (such as entering the workforce at later ages), means we can expect a greater proportion of people to work past the age 65, says an Eckler ‘GroupNews.’ However, those choosing to work past age 65 want to ensure that they keep the same compensation package as employees under age 65 doing the same work. So far, plan sponsors have generally resisted extending benefits to actively working employees beyond age 65 as they fear the cost of doing so would be too expensive. Of the benefits typically offered by plan sponsors, continuing long-term disability benefits after age 65 is more challenging than continuing health or dental benefits. However, in some cases it may not be as cost prohibitive as expected. While greater numbers of people become disabled at older ages and, as a result, the ‘gross’ cost (before any offsets) of providing disability benefits increases as members age, most disability benefits can be offset by other disability or pension payments the member receives. Benefits can be reduced by CPP disability, for example, or pension payments from an employer-sponsored defined benefit pension plan. Both can significantly reduce the net cost of providing disability benefits after age 65. Plan sponsors might also consider setting a limited benefit period, for example, two or five years, should an employee become disabled at age 60 or older; reducing disability coverage amounts provided after age 65. Another move is to implement a plan design that provides disability coverage that increases with years of service. If a plan sponsor determines that disability benefits will no longer cease at age 65, they will also need to decide on a revised age at which benefits will terminate. The impact of extending disability beyond age 65 will differ significantly by a plan sponsor and is highly dependent on factors such as plan demographics and whether or not the employer sponsors a DB plan that can be integrated with active employee disability benefits. Plan sponsors should seek actuarial advice to consider if, and how, the provision of disability benefits beyond age 65 would be sustainable.

TECHNOLOGY TRANSFORMS LANDSCAPE
Technology has transformed the employment landscape, says Catherine Bierman, product portfolio manager at Medavie Blue Cross. She told its ‘The Value of Versatility’ session that, for example, 20 years ago the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic could have been greater as the average worker had far less ability to work effectively at home for an extended period. This could have created a very different trajectory of how quickly the virus spread and how many people were infected in the year so before vaccines became widely available, so COVID accelerated the pace of technology adoption for work and in healthcare. And now that the genie is out of the bottle, it’s not going back in, she said. The availability of virtual care options for medical care has become increasingly essential to the healthcare system and to modern benefit plans. People know now that it only takes a few clicks of a mouse or few taps on their phone to connect with a doctor, health practitioner, or therapist and it can be at their convenience and from wherever they like. “That’s not something people are going to want to give up whenever the pandemic is, hopefully, soon over.” Employers need to focus on shifts that were taking place before COVID, said Derek Weir, manager, optional benefits, at Medavie Blue Cross. With five generations working side-by-side in the workplace, healthcare needs are varied. For example, spending is dominated by drugs for older workers. For younger workers dollars are going for mental health and massage. Plans are spending as much on massage for young workers as they do on cancer drugs for 60-year-olds. And employees are looking for more choice on how benefits dollars are spent. Since health benefits make up a “significant chunk” of the total rewards package, they are clearly an attraction and retention tool which can make or break deals. Employers should really consider enhancing their value proposition through their benefits plans to set them apart from the competition when they are trying to attract new talent.

DENTAL BENEFIT LAUNCHING
The first stage for the proposed Canada Dental Benefit will provide eligible parents or guardians with direct, up-front tax-free payments to cover dental expenses for their children under 12-years-old. It will provide payments up to $650 per child per year for families with adjusted net income under $90,000 per year and without dental coverage. It is estimated that 500,000 Canadian children will benefit. The target implementation date is December 1, pending Parliamentary approval and Royal Assent of enabling legislation. The program would cover expenses retroactive to October 1, 2022. The federal government remains committed to full implementation of a dental care program for households with incomes under $90,000 by 2025.

SETH GODIN'S BLOGWho cares?

No one cares. That happens rarely.

Someone cares. That happens all the time, and it’s at the heart of our work.

Everyone cares. Almost never.

Someone is enough. In fact, someone is the entire point.

My Take on Seths Post

Put another way...We see so many advisors trying to be everything to everybody. They try to make" everyone care", which never (or rarely) happens.

Isn't it better to have a target market that cares (the SOMEONES)? In that way you're more like to avoid the "No One Cares" category. Choosing great, aligned and trusting client/partners and discarding those that don't care, or are a bad fit, is fulfilling in the long run...and way more fun.

KEYNOTE SESSION:

Linda Duxbury - TORN BETWEEN WANT AND REALITY: HYBRID WORK AND WORK-LIFE BALANCE

More than two years after many employees started working from their homes, both employers and employees are talking about how they want to work post-pandemic. However, few are factoring work-life boundary preferences into the discussion. Research in this area has shown employees use two different approaches — segmentation and integration — when attempting to balance work and family. This session will use data from the 2020-23 Employee Wellbeing in Times of COVID-19 study to review the relationship between boundary management preferences, work-life balance and employee well-being, outlining the implications for employers and employees as they seek a balance between what they want and what’s actually best for them.
