Dear Subscriber,

It's been a an interesting year and we are only half way done (and a bit). From sky high dental fee guide increases, to Ozempic being used off label at a scary rate, to more convoluted disability claims, a continued increase in rare disorder drugs (doubled from 2011 to 2015 and doubled again from 2016 to 2020 to reach 104 drugs over $100,000) and new treatments hitting an all new high of $1.8 million dollars, all driving up rates faster than ever before (my block is up 9% from last year).

All this means that your advice, assistance, guidance and partnership means more to employers now, more than ever before. They just need valued and trusted partners to help them through it all. That's you!

Fine tune your game, spruce up your value proposition, keep up your education and get deep into a speciality so you're one of the very best.

I mean group in general, but there are lots of sub groups within benefits that you may be able to identify with, that have unique needs (trucking, not-for-profits, gig worker space, employers with high cost drugs etc etc.

Make a difference...Have a great day and May the Sails Be With You.

Dave

SETH GODIN'S BLOGRemarkable pronouncements

The scientific rule of thumb is simple: When you make a bold claim, you need significant research to back it up.

Telling us that eating vegetables is healthy can be justified by a fairly simple high school science paper. But if you want to claim that the moon is made of celery and Elmer’s Glue, we’re going to need more than your back-of-the-envelope calculations.

Lately, we’re seeing two things begin to take the place of good research when making outrageous claims:

Lots of online celebrity.

Particularly bold and noxious claims.

Being angry or a famous podcaster (or both) doesn’t excuse you from the burden of proof.

My Take on Seths Post

Put another way...we have a lot of part-time generalists in the benefits space claiming; easy answers to divert claims (without proof), reduced rates without repercussions, and a pile of "too good to be true" promises.

Knowing the truth, compiling, and sharing the evidence, and educating clients so they understand the difference between fact and fiction, will make your block more solid, your clients more engaged and trusting , and make the overall journey a lot more enjoyable.

AI and benefits fraud: A double-edged sword
Emerging technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, have the potential to revolutionize the way we live and work. Insurers are using a variety of these technologies to detect and control benefits fraud. But they can also be leveraged for nefarious purposes – including benefits fraud. This presentation will discuss some of the technologies that are becoming commonplace today and explore the potential for their use and misuse in the future. It will also examine what group insurers can do to harness these technologies while minimizing the risks.

Speaker:  Jon Sider, Director, Group Health and Dental Claims, Equitable Life

It's complicated: Mental health and disability management
No two disability cases are the same. Each comes with its own unique set of circumstances. But regardless of the cause of the disability, the claimant’s mental health almost always plays a role. Using real-life case studies, this presentation will examine the complex factors that can contribute to a claimant’s recovery and return to work, including physical and psychological co-morbidities, the workplace environment and the claimant’s financial wellbeing. The presentation will examine the resources available to bring about positive outcomes and discuss what plan sponsors can do to help prevent disability and improve the health of their workforce.
Speaker: Meredith Weldon, Director, Group Life and Disability, Equitable Life;
Jeff Alcock, Group Benefit Operations Vice-President, Equitable Life

Controlling the controllable: Managing the shift in drug trends
The last 12 months has been characterized by extreme changes – both expected and unexpected – to the Canadian drug “world”. More employers are exposed to trend volatility and risk. This session will focus on providing practical insights on what plan sponsors can do to protect themselves, and the steps that Equitable is taking to help mitigate that risk.

Speaker: Martin Chung, Assistant Vice President, Strategic Health Management, Equitable Life
