Dear Subscriber,

As you read this, I'm either...
1. Sitting at the airport lounge.
2. Flying out to Vancouver, or
3. Setting up for the CGIB PACL workshop on Tuesday.

Whichever, I'm excited to be having the opportunity to get out of the office, see our existing CGIB members, meet many new prospective members (this event is about 50/50) asnd get better together.

There is nothing better than coming together, sharing stories, arguing over things (sometimes the best learning), exchanging experiences and overall raising our game.

If you're not in Vancouver, no worries, we'll have Toronto seminar in November, and more events in 2024 and 2025. Until then, make sure you're on the Slack channel, and getting out to the Coffee Chats. They are almost as good as in-person and are guaranteed to raise your game.

I'd really like every member to complete the survey below. Feedback helps all parties. Thanks in advance for that.

Have a great day.

Dave

Invitation to Participate: Benefits Advisor Survey

Benefits advisors play a crucial role in designing health benefit plans and are very often a proxy voice for their employer clients. However, there are very few comprehensive surveys that cover important and practical concerns for benefits advisors and employers.

As part of a new multi-stakeholder initiative, H3 Consulting and Mapol Inc. have developed a survey to identify and rank key issues, concerns and opportunities in drug and health benefits. We also ask about important policy developments and key therapies. As a valued benefits expert, we need your insights.

For those who participate in the survey, we will email you the aggregate results in appreciation of your time. It should take you, on average, about 10 minutes to complete:

Please kindly complete the survey by Tuesday October 24, 2023.

Thank you for your time and insights. We hope the results from this unique survey will help you better serve your clients, stay current on group health market conditions and provide you with helpful benchmark information.

Please note: Your email address will only be collected in order to send you the survey results and only the aggregate results will be shared externally. Neither individual respondents nor their firms will be identified. Please only participate in the survey once.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Chris Bonnett, MHSc, PhD, H3 Consulting at chris@hthree.ca.

SETH GODIN'S BLOG -  Confusion and certainty

When facing a complex problem, it’s easy to become confused.

Lately, it’s become socially acceptable to express your confusion with certainty. Untrained in the field, make a pronouncement that makes it clear that you have not just an understanding of what’s going on, but also that you’ve figured out the causes and the next steps.

The thing is, confusion shared often leads to the learning we need to become productive as we move forward. “I don’t understand this part,” is a great thing to say before someone helps you understand it.

On the other hand, certainty is almost guaranteed to maintain your confusion, particularly when the thing you were sure was going to work, doesn’t.

Put another way... I love it when people say I'm wrong, uninformed, or made a mistake. It means I have another opportunity to learn, to up my game and take it to the next level.

Too many advisors "THINK" they know what they are doing,"GUESS" at answers, FAIL to get full and complete information, make proclamations of surety, and overall muddle through using past mislearnings in the wrong context, WRONGLY assuming that every carrier or situation is like one 20 years ago.

In doing so, they are putting themselves, practice, clients (and their employees) at risk. Why not say...I'm not sure...
...but because I care about my clients, I belong to an association with over 5000 years of combined experience I can draw on. Let me check. (I do it all the time :-)

It’s expected that by 2035, 1 in 4 people will be living with obesity, representing approximately 1.9 billion people worldwide. Obesity has long been misunderstood and stigmatized as a lifestyle condition, instead of a complex disease with significant comorbidities and health impacts.

On Nov. 1 from 1:00 – 2:00 PM ET, join Benefits Canada and Novo Nordisk for a webinar that will dive into the science, misconceptions and complexities of this chronic disease. Join to learn about treatments that can contribute to improved outcomes and how plan sponsors can gain an understanding of how they can better support their plan members living with obesity.
