Dear Subscriber,

Happy Halloween!

I think taking kids out trick or treating is like hunting for group clients.
  • In both we are looking for the reward, be it candy or clients.
  • In both we usually go to the places we are comfortable, maybe ours, or a good neighbourhood, where we fit in
  • In both, we might stay away from dark or risky areas
  • After the day (or night) is over, we head home to check our haul

But this is just the start. this is the prospecting. We aren't eating yet.

Once we get back to home base, we...
  • Check to see that the candy is sealed and safe to eat
  • Review the prospects to see if they are safe. This might be checking to ensure they are "real" groups, with aligned goals, and not likely to put us at risk by ignoring rules, laws or contracts

Once we've sorted out the "bad" treats or prospects, the fun begins. We get to work on enjoying them by eating the candy, or changing the prospects to clients, and enjoying the rewards.

Let's avoid the risky stuff and enjoy the Kraft Caramels (arguably the best treat there is :-)

Have a great day.

Dave

SETH GODIN'S BLOG -  What are the defaults?

Perhaps they were chosen a very long time ago.
Or with very little thought.

It could be that the constraints that led to the default are long gone.
They might be perpetuating bad choices, injustice or sub-optimal outputs.

The best way to fix something is to look at what we assume is the ‘right’ starting spot.

In persistent systems, it might be difficult to change the default setting, but knowing what it is and how it got there is a great place to begin.

Put another way...This is what we see in benefits every day. People tend to stick with the old "traditional insurance plan" because that's what they grew up with, what they are comfortable with and what they understand (advisors too).

Is that the right solution? It may be, but it's more likely the employer could benefit from something new, that is a better fit for their firm. Maybe it's an HSA ( to keep costs down), or a hybrid plan (to provide flex, insurance and cost controls), or an exclusionary formulary (to protect against high cost drugs), might be better solutions.

Maybe you can change the "default" to "Your Unique Offering".
